Mosquito Identification & Prevention

What are mosquitoes?

Belonging to the order Diptera, mosquitoes are fly-like insects that are mostly gray, black, or brown, with some species having metallic scales on their bodies. Mosquitoes have a single pair of wings covered in scales, and long, thin legs. They also have a proboscis – a long, thin structure that they use for feeding both on blood and plant nectar. Plant nectar is the primary food source for both male and female mosquitoes.

When living on our properties, mosquitoes create big problems for people. Female mosquitoes bite and feed on the blood of people and animals in order to produce viable eggs. Mosquitoes are relentless in their quest for blood meals and have the ability to drive people that are trying to spend outside, back inside.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

Some view mosquitoes as one of the most dangerous insects in the world because they can spread a wide variety of diseases to people. In developing countries, mosquitoes spread malaria, which kills or debilitates millions each year. In the United States, they are less of a threat, but you should still take care to avoid contact with them. Mosquitoes living in the U.S. can transmit things like the West Nile virus and encephalitis.

In addition to spreading diseases, they are problematic because of their bites. Mosquito bites leave behind itchy, red welts. No one wants to walk outside and be immediately attacked by hordes of biting mosquitoes. Large populations of mosquitoes can make it impossible to enjoy your outdoor space.

Why do I have a mosquito problem?

Mosquitoes are a problem on your property because it offers them ample places to feed and breed. The biggest attractant to mosquitoes are areas of standing water because this is where they lay their eggs. Properties with or located near swamps, wooded areas, drainage ditches, flood plains, ponds, lakes, and low lying areas are where mosquitoes thrive. Other things that collect water and attract mosquitoes include buckets, clogged gutters, flowerpots, trash can lids, and the tops of tarps.

Where will I find mosquitoes?

During the spring, summer, and fall, when the weather is hot and humid, mosquitoes are the most active. Their busiest time of day is at dawn or dusk when the weather is at its coolest. During the heat of the day, mosquitoes rest in areas of tall grass, under trees, and in areas of dense vegetation. They will also hide out under decks and porches.

Mosquitoes don’t look to move indoors, but often find their way into homes while out looking for food. Usually, they get inside through open windows and doors.
